Downtown Dixieland Band has the traditional 7-piece Dixieland band lineup: 4 Horns [Trumpet, Clarinet, Trombone/Euphonium, Tenor Saxophone], Guitar/Banjo, Bass, Drums

 

John Doyle

 

Biography

 

John, a founding member of the band, plays clarinet and covers vocals. He studied classical clarinet to ALCM level under well-known Limerick clarinettist, Tom Cantillon. He has taught clarinet and saxophone for many years to both children and adults. John has been involved with Brass and Reed bands for over 25 years, having played with both the Boherbuoy Brass and Reed Band (Limk.), and the Charles J. Kickham Band (Tipperary), and has served as musical director to St. John's Brass and Reed Band (Limk.) from 1998 to the present day.

Harry Hockedy

 

Biography

 

Harry, our drummer, has been drumming for the last 50 years. He played in several blues, jazz and rock'n roll bands.

Martin Doyle

 

Biography

 

Martin, has been a member of the band since it's formation. He learned to play the Trumpet by sitting in on rehearsals and being mentored by members of St. John's Brass & Reed band, with whom he has been involved with for the past 15 years. Martin has also previously played with the Boherbouy Brass and Reed band(Limk), and the Charles J. Kickham Band (Tipp).

Jody O'Connor

 

Biography

Comes from a musical family and played a lot of Folk Music in 70's winning All Ireland Slogadh in 1976.

 

Has since played with a number of groups enjoying a variety of musical genres.

Shane Doyle

 

Biography

 

Shane plays the tenor saxophone with the band, and is 30 years old. He studied classical clarinet for many years in Limerick under the tutelage of well-known Limerick clarinettist, Mr. Tom Cantillon.

 

Shane has also a background in the brass and reed band scene, having been a member of both St. John's Brass and Reed Band and the Boherbuoy Band in Limerick, and being a current member of the Rathfarnham Concert Band in Dublin.

Michael Dooley

 

Biography

An honours graduate of Waterford Institute of Technology and of Trinity College Dublin, Michael Dooley began his brass and woodwind studies with Tommy Joyce continued with Martin Prynn, Professor J.M.Thome and Graham Salvage.

 

He is a regular performer with the RTE Concert Orchestra, RTE National Symphony Orchestra and The Irish Chamber Orchestra. He is a founder member of the Limerick Wind Octet and is Bandmaster of St. Patrick's Brass Band, Galway while also conducting the Galway Youth Orchestra.

 

Michael has worked also as musical director for a number of Galway musical societies . He is currently the bandleader with the Moonlight Big Band in Galway and the Limerick City Big Band.

 

 

Michael comes from a well known jazz family in Galway and grew up playing Dixieland music under the direction of his father Kieran Dooley.

 

He is principal bassoonist with the Irish Symphonic Wind Ensemble, the Limerick Philharmonic and the LCU Orchestra. He is on the teaching staff at the Limerick Municipal School of Music in Limerick and is the bassoon and woodwind coach of the international faculty of the annual BISYOC orchestral summer course held throughout Europe each summer.
